Erwin Lake and Baldwin Lake sit at the eastern edge of the valley, past Big Bear City, where the terrain opens up and lots tend to get bigger. Both are unincorporated San Bernardino County. This is the part of Big Bear people mean when they talk about a more rural, ranch-style pace — and where horse-friendly property is most often found.
Erwin Lake is a quiet residential community named for the small lake at its center, near Erwin Lake Park. Baldwin Lake, farther east, is Big Bear's most rural and ranch-like area — wide open, with a seasonal lake bed that fills at times and a well-known population of wild burros. Together they offer the valley's best combination of space, big-sky views, and quiet, while still being a reasonable drive from Big Bear City's services.
